Gyoza?

Heck yeah!

If you’re anything like me, you can probably eat these Japanese dumplings (also known as potstickers) anytime.

And, although I prefer to share seasonal recipes with you, it doesn’t matter what season it is when it comes to Gyoza!

If I have an opportunity to make potstickers and eat them at any time of the year, I will.

And one of my favorite things about eating this fun Japanese food is the dipping sauce!

What Is Gyoza Sauce?

Gyoza sauce is a dipping sauce that is usually served with potstickers or Japanese dumplings.

The sauce can be made several different ways, but the main purpose of serving a dipping sauce with Gyoza is to impart interesting flavors onto the Gyoza.

Potstickers (Gyoza) can be somewhat bland on their own.

These Japanese dumplings are oftentimes filled with meat, vegetables, or even shrimp and are a very fun food to eat!

Please check out Japan-Guide.com’s informative article about Gyoza if you want to know more about the different types of these interesting and flavorful Japanese dumplings and their origins.

What Are The Main Components Of Gyoza Sauce?

Traditional Japanese Gyoza Sauce is comprised of just 2 Ingredients!

One-half soy sauce and one-half vinegar.

That’s it!

The limited number of ingredients make this dipping sauce a very fun and quick recipe to make.

What Are Some Optional Ingredients Added To Gyoza Sauce?

Here is where we can get creative with our dipping sauce recipe!

Sometimes sesame oil is also combined with the soy and vinegar components when making a Gyoza Sauce.

Occasionally, dried chili powder may be added for flavor, as well as to intensify the heat.

Some online recipes even call for rice wine vinegar (which is not that easy to find near me!)

But – as promised in the title of this post – we are going to keep this recipe QUICK and EASY and ONLY use TWO ingredients.

Greenlife – Cookware for the home chef

I’ll share my favorite optional ingredient, as well, below but it’s totally not necessary.

Quick Gyoza Dipping Sauce – The Ingredients

If you’ve read any of my other articles, you’ll know that I absolutely love Asian food.

And I am all about being creative when coming up with my dipping sauce recipes.

My Quick Gyoza Sauce Recipe Uses Soy Sauce, Balsamic Dressing and Dried Chilies (Optional)

Just check out my Vietnamese Dipping Fish Sauce that I made to go with my Fresh Spring Rolls and you’ll see exactly what I mean!

The ingredients I used in THIS recipe include:

  • Soy Sauce – I used regular soy sauce like this one (different brand than in photo) as opposed to light soy or dark soy in this easy recipe. It’s totally fine if you only have a different variety of soy sauce, you just may need to experiment with the ratio of soy-to-vinegar.

  • Balsamic Vinaigrette (with Honey) – For my ‘vinegar’ component, I used this EXACT Balsamic Vinaigrette with honey from Amazon. I go into more detail below about why this works, but the main reason I used this dressing was because that’s what I had at home! It ended up working out better than I expected.

  • Dried Chilies (OPTIONAL) – This is the optional ingredient that I mentioned and it is totally up to you whether you use them or not. I used these dried chilies as mainly a garnishment. But I like to add them to certain recipes when I want to kick the heat up a few notches.

There are some other ingredients that many online Gyoza sauce recipes include – we’ll talk about those later.

But this recipe can be made – and tastes great – using just the 2 ingredients I mentioned above!

How Is Your Quick Gyoza Dipping Sauce Recipe Different From Other Gyoza Sauce Recipes Online?

Almost every other recipe I’ve read online, including even this excellent Gyoza Dipping Sauce recipe, calls for the traditional (base) ingredients of soy sauce and a vinegar component (almost always rice wine vinegar).

But that’s where the similarities end!

They then include sesame oil, which does add a nice rich, nutty flavor, I have to admit.

Greenlife – Cookware for the home chef

Then some of those recipes suggest dried chili powder. Again, there’s nothing wrong with this!

How about some ponzu? What is ponzu you ask? Check it out here!

Oh yeah, and maybe some other ingredients…

But you probably clicked on their recipe because it was ONLY three or ONLY four ingredients, didn’t you?

And by now you’ll be running around to stores and spending more time trying to find the ingredients you need for the dipping sauce you’re trying to make than enjoying your potstickers!

My Quick Gyoza Sauce Recipe Uses JUST 2 Ingredients

This dipping sauce recipe uses JUST Traditional Soy Sauce and Balsamic Vinaigrette (with Honey) salad dressing.

Just as many other recipes substitute rice wine vinegar for the vinegar component in their Gyoza sauce recipes, I am substituting Balsamic Vinaigrette.

Why Are You Substituting Balsamic Dressing In Your Quick Gyoza Dipping Sauce Recipe?

I’m glad you asked!

The Balsamic Vinaigrette (with Honey) is my substitute for the vinegar component in this Gyoza Dipping Sauce Recipe and it serves a few purposes.

It complements the Soy just as the vinegar component in a traditional Gyoza sauce does.

The Balsamic Vinaigrette also enables us to skip the rice wine vinegar, which is something that not everybody has at home!

Greenlife – Cookware for the home chef

I felt is was more likely that you had some type of Balsamic Dressing in your fridge right now versus rice wine vinegar!

And if you already have these ingredients, I thought MAYBE you would give my recipe a try! (Please let me know if you made this and how it turned out by posting a comment down below!)

*****Tired of shopping for ingredients? Get everything you need for making healthy meals at home delivered directly to your door from EveryPlate!*****

Finally, the honey component in the balsamic dressing I used also imparts some flavors similar to those that come from the sesame oil (nutty, sweet) that many other Gyoza sauce recipes use!

Greenlife – Cookware for the home chef

It’s not totally necessary to use the Balsamic with honey – you can get away with using traditional balsamic dressing in this recipe, but if you have a version with honey I think it works a little better.

Keeping Things Simple with This Gyoza Sauce Recipe

I like to create simple variations of recipes I enjoy, while always striving to utilize the fewest ingredients possible where I can.

This saves me money since there are fewer ingredients I need to buy.

It also saves me time because I often use ingredients I already have at home – as long as they make some kind of sense!

Greenlife – Cookware for the home chef

I am all about keeping it simple on SeasonalCookbook.com!

Recipe Creation Can Be Both Practical And Creative

Whether you decide to follow a more involved Gyoza Dipping Sauce recipe online and use every ingredient the author suggests, or put your own spin on this recipe, cooking can be practical and creative.

In the case of this Quick Gyoza Dipping Sauce recipe, I already had the Balsamic Vinaigrette with Honey at home and didn’t need to shop for ingredients or spend money (Practical).

Additionally, I used a non-traditional ‘vinegar’ component – an ingredient I haven’t seen another online recipe for Gyoza Sauce use (Balsamic Dressing) – as a key ingredient in my Gyoza Dipping Sauce Recipe (Creative).

Greenlife – Cookware for the home chef

And this dipping sauce actually tastes incredible when these 2 ingredients are combined into this powerhouse of flavor!

Also, I hate shopping for ingredients and prefer this alternative for my weekly meal planning almost always!

But Your Ingredients Photo Above Shows Three Ingredients

Yes, the dried chilies on the plate are an optional ingredient I like to add.

Honestly, they are mainly for creating a more interesting food photo. It’s something we food bloggers think about!

Quick Gyoza Dipping Sauce with Chilies
Quick Gyoza Dipping Sauce with Dried Chili Pieces

Certainly, if you let the Gyoza sauce sit in the fridge overnight after adding the sliced chilies, it will become infused with some of the chili flavor as the oil from the dried chili pepper pieces seeps into the dipping sauce.

Greenlife – Cookware for the home chef

This adds a bit of heat, which I like! But you can totally leave the dried chili pepper pieces out of this recipe.

Quick Gyoza Dipping Sauce – Recipe Equipment Needed

A small dipping bowl, spoon and plate is really all the recipe equipment needed to make this quick Gyoza dipping sauce

The small dipping bowl can be used to mix your ingredients, as well as to serve the dipping sauce in. (Hint: If you’re looking for some unique dipping sauce bowls, check these out on Amazon – cute and unusual!)

A small spoon is handy for stirring the ingredients together.

Greenlife – Cookware for the home chef

And the plate is perfect for holding the potstickers and for catching any of the sauce that might drip off your Gyoza after dipping it.

I like to serve my Japanese dumplings on a small plate, surrounding the sauce in the dipping bowl, as shown in the photo below.

Gyoza on Plate Surrounding Dipping Sauce in Bowl

Place the plate with the Gyoza between you and a friend and you can each take a potsticker, dip it in the sauce and bring it to your own plate in order to eat it.

It’s a fun way to share a food that tastes great and is also fun to eat!

You will love the simplicity of this Gyoza Dipping Sauce recipe! Although it uses only 2 ingredients, this dipping sauce is not short on flavor. Enjoy it with your potstickers or add it to your next stir fry. It’s slightly salty, rich, and mildly sweet and is a perfect accompaniment to any Japanese dish.

I have included AMAZON Ingredient links to the Soy Sauce and Balsamic Vinaigrette I used so you can save time and buy them online if you want to duplicate this recipe, exactly.

Directions

  • Fill your dipping bowl roughly half-way with regular soy sauce (NOTE: I didn’t use a measuring cup when making this Gyoza dipping sauce, but if you feel more comfortable please use a measuring cup and fill it with 8 fluid ounces of regular soy sauce)
  • Add your Balsamic Vinaigrette with Honey to the dipping bowl with the soy sauce in an equal amount (NOTE: Again, I didn’t use a measuring cup for this, but feel free to measure 8 fluid ounces of Balsamic dressing and add it to the soy sauce)
  • Stir the Soy Sauce and Balsamic Vinaigrette with Honey together using a spoon for about 30 seconds so that the 2 ingredients in the dipping sauce get mixed together, thoroughly.
  • (OPTIONAL) Slice some dried chili peppers into small ringlets and gently sprinkle the small chili pieces to the top of the Gyoza Dipping Sauce.Quick Gyoza Dipping Sauce with Chilies

FAQs

Below we’ll look at some Frequently Asked Questions regarding this Quick Gyoza Dipping Sauce.

How Long Does Gyoza Sauce Last?

Unused sauce (sauce that you haven’t dipped anything in yet) lasts for up to 3 days in the fridge, assuming you store it according to my guidelines below.

Greenlife – Cookware for the home chef

How Do You Store Gyoza Dipping Sauce?

Store unused sauce in an air-tight condiment container like one of these and your unused dipping sauce should last up to 3 days.

Once you’ve dipped your Gyoza – or anything else for that matter – into the sauce, I wouldn’t try to store it any longer.

**Quick Tip: You can make more sauce than you think you’ll need and only pour into your dipping bowl the amount you’re planning to eat. Then you can store the rest in these air-tight condiment containers I recommended above.

What To Serve This Sauce In?

I like to use a small dipping bowl that, typically, holds enough sauce for two people.
