Smmer Salsa Recipe

Mom’s Homemade Salsa

Salsa….I love Salsa!

It’s a noun – “What a delicious salsa!”

It’s a verb – “Would you like to Salsa?”

I can’t get enough! Salsa is so amazing.

It can be a topping over grilled chicken. It can be a condiment  with shrimp, but most of us know and love it as something we can dip our tortilla chips into.

According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, Salsa is defined as a “…a usually spicy sauce of chopped tomatoes, onions, and peppers that is commonly served with Mexican food…”

Ever wonder how long salsa lasts? If so, please check out my article How Long Is Salsa Good For After Opening? In it, I look at how long fresh salsa like this one lasts and how long jarred salsa lasts, as well.

Salsa can be chunky or even creamy, but most salsas have a tomato base and can range in flavor from very mild to so-hot-it-can-melt-your-face!

For this recipe, we’ll keep it on the mild-er side 🙂 (NOTE: If you have a spouse or partner who likes a spicier salsa and you do not, you can forgo the jalapenos in this recipe altogether, but check out my article 9 Ways to Make Mild Salsa Spicier.)

Mom’s Homemade Salsa is a chunky salsa that I like to make with tomatoes, jalapenos, onions, cilantro, and lime juice. It’s not a complicated recipe, it’s just an awesome summer recipe.

So, here goes…

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Chill Time: one hour

Recipe Ingredients Needed:

  • 4 medium-sized tomatoes
  • 2 jalapeno peppers (more for hotter salsa)
  • 1 sweet vidalia onion
  • 1 small can chopped tomatoes
  • 1/2 package taco seasoning
  • fresh cilantro (to taste)
  • juice from one lime

Recipe Instructions:

  1. Chop tomatoes, onion, and cilantro into small pieces. Set aside.
  2. Wearing rubber gloves, carefully chop jalapeno peppers and remove seeds. Set aside.
  3. Squeeze juice from one lime into a medium-sized mixing bowl.
  4. Combine rest of ingredients in the bowl and mix well.
  5. Chill before serving.

It’s a pretty basic salsa recipe, I know. But I love Salsa so much it’s not even funny – LOL! Ok, maybe my Salsa obsession is a little bit funny, but Salsa is so easy to prepare and is great for any type of summer gathering like a picnic or barbecue, I ALWAYS make it and I ALWAYS love it.

  3. I love chunky salsas with lots of tomatoes YUM! I’m definitely going to try this recipe since it doesn’t seem too intimidating!

  4. Yes! This is a pretty easy recipe that is healthy and low carb in nature. Sometimes I add cilantro, as well, but I know some folks do not like cilantro (I’ll never understand why 🙂 – LOL!). Thank you for stopping bye!
