These two similar dairy products couldn’t be more different. From their nutritional values and fat content to the recipes that each is best suited for, we’ll examine when to use each. In some cases one can be used as a substitute for the other, but certain dishes demand one instead of the other. Greek Yogurt Vs Sour Cream compares and contrasts these two popular dairy products!

Greek yogurt and sour cream are both dairy products with similar textures.

But sour cream and Greek yogurt differ in fat content and nutritional value, as well as the recipes for which each is ideally suited.

Greek Yogurt Vs Sour Cream – Main Differences

While each of these items is a dairy product, there are several key differences between sour cream and Greek yogurt.

In general, Greek yogurt has:

  • Lower Fat
  • Higher Protein
  • Ideal Qualities to be substituted for sour cream in many recipes

Sour Cream, however, is:

  • Creamier
  • Richer in Flavor
  • Higher in Calories

Due to these key differences, sour cream provides a richer, creamier ‘base’ for some recipes.

But at the expense of higher saturated fat and lower nutritional value.

Copycat Taco Bell Quesadilla Sauce

I love copycat recipes!

I think it’s so much fun to try to replicate my favorite restaurant recipes, sauces and sides.

Recently, I made this Copycat Taco Bell Quesadilla Sauce Recipe that I think tastes a lot like Taco Bell’s dipping sauce.

In that recipe, in order to duplicate the creamy texture of Taco Bell’s popular quesadilla sauce, I HAD TO USE SOUR CREAM.

Although this increased the fat content of that recipe, my goal when making a copycat recipe is to try to replicate the restaurant version as closely as possible.

To achieve the rich, creamy texture I needed I didn’t even consider using Greek Yogurt.

Tzatziki Dipping Sauce Needs Greek Yogurt!

The first recipe that came to mind where Greek Yogurt is an absolute necessity is Tzatziki.

Greek Yogurt Vs Sour Cream – Key Properties Of Each

Greek yogurt – even my favorite Greek Yogurt from Amazon – is more acidic than sour cream and lower in fat.

These two key properties of Greek Yogurt make it more susceptible to curdling when heated.

Knowing that important piece of information, then, tells us to avoid including Greek Yogurt in hot dishes or cooked recipes.

Sour Cream – dues to it’s higher fat content and creamier texture – is great for Cremas like my Smoky Red Pepper Crema Recipe.

Sour cream is also ideal for spicy dishes because it’s higher fat provides a cooling effect.

This is why sour cream is so great as a topping for spicy chili or nachos with spicy jalapenos!

When Is Greek Yogurt An Acceptable Substitute For Sour Cream?

So far, we’ve looked at two very different recipes – one featuring sour cream and the other, Greek yogurt.

In each case, I don’t think that either dairy product could be substituted for the other.

However, since we now know that Greek Yogurt may curdle when heated, the ideal recipes to substitute Greek Yogurt for Sour Cream are Chilled Recipes!

Chilled Recipes Where Greek Yogurt Is A Perfect Substitute For Sour Cream

  • Cold Dips
  • Salad Dressings
  • Chilled Soups
  • Substitute for Buttermilk (in all of the above, as long as not heated)

In the examples above, Greek Yogurt is a perfect substitute for sour cream (or even buttermilk) as long as no cooking is involved.

Sweet fruit, such as strawberries or even peaches, are perfect for dipping into a nice Greek Yogurt like this one made for dipping!

Does Greek Yogurt Work In Soups?

Since Greek Yogurt is a dairy product that is lower in fat than sour cream, it is susceptible to curdling when heated.

As a result, Greek Yogurt is not ideal for hot soups.

Also, I have a personal preference to add sour cream, specifically, as a topping to certain rich, hearty soups.

Tomato soup is an example of a soup that I like to add a nice cool dollop of cold sour cream like this as a topping.

Hot chili is another example of a dish that sour cream is better suited for.

However, Greek Yogurt is perfectly acceptable and works well as a topping for chilled soups.

A perfect example would be my Cool As a Cucumber Soup – this is a classic, chilled soup perfect for summer picnics.

And a thick, creamy Greek Yogurt like this one pairs amazingly well with cucumber – remember Tzatziki?

Greek Yogurt Vs Sour Cream – Summary

Just to summarize, Greek Yogurt has a lower fat content, higher protein, and fewer calories than sour cream.

This makes Greek Yogurt a healthier alternative than sour cream.

But that doesn’t mean that we can substitute Greek Yogurt for sour cream whenever we want!

Sour Cream is a Brighter White Than Greek Yogurt, too!

It’s important to remember that Greek Yogurt – since it is lower in fat – may curdle when heated.

As a result, we want to avoid using Greek Yogurt in hot dishes or recipes that need to be cooked at high temperatures.

Alternatively, Greek Yogurt is a perfect substitute for sour cream in chilled recipes.

These may include sauces, dips, sald dressings, and to serve with chilled soups.

Final Word

Finally, I think we all agree that certain recipes just demand one of these dairy producs over the other.

My Copycat Taco Bell Quesadilla Sauce would not have been quite as creamy without sour cream!

And I can’t imagine dipping my next chicken gyro in anything other than Tzatziki made with Greek Yogurt!
