Daily Harvest Meal Kit Delivery Box - just opened

Daily Harvest Review + Discount Code – My Experience

If you’ve seen the commercials, you probably know the slogan, “We take care of food, so food can take care of you…”

The advertiser is Daily Harvest and they are another player in the pre-packaged pre-made, fast growing meal delivery business space.

***UPDATE: As of December 2023, It appears Daily Harvest No Longer Offers an Affiliate Program or a way for me to offer you a discount code through this review. I will recommend some other Meal Delivery Services below for those who are interested.

In this review I will cut to the chase of what, exactly, Daily Harvest provides, how their Meal Delivery business differs from other similar models and whether Daily Harvest is worth the price.

A special thank you to Bailey from Daily Harvest for providing this sample delivery box for the purposes of this review. The opinions expressed are entirely mine and mine alone (although I did get some input from my wife)!

Daily Harvest works with farmers to grow the best produce and freezes ingredients at peak ripeness within 24 hours at the source to lock in nutrition and taste. In order to maintain this freshness throughout the delivery process, they package their food on dry ice.

When we received our box in the picture above, the food inside certainly arrived sufficiently frozen – like Antarctica frozen. This is good because it preserves the freshness of the ingredients. It is bad because I was craving their frosty strawberry compote and it seemed like I had to wait forever for it to thaw (I know, poor me)!

Greenlife – Cookware for the home chef

I was told by Bailey from Daily Harvest that, “Our boxes, liners and dry ice barriers are made of paper and are 100% curbside recyclable. Our Harvest Bowls and Latte packaging are 100% compostable and we are working on transitioning the rest of our packaging to that as well!

Contents May Shift in Transit!

The first time my wife and I heard about Daily Harvest was via their television commercials.

As someone who was interested in “…finally trying one of these meal delivery kit services..” I was, at first, somewhat confused by what Daily Harvest provided, exactly.

In their commercials – at least the ones I had seen up to this point – it looked like maybe smoothies and some types of healthier frozen treat alternatives. But it was hard to tell…

In fact, they provide much more. Here is a quick overview:

Daily Harvest’s Main Collections

Daily Harvest offers several (many) different food options, from full meals to snacks, all loosely organized into their different collections:

-Harvest Bowls

-Oat Bowls

-Chia Bowls

-Flatbread

Greenlife – Cookware for the home chef

-Scoops, their plant-based ice cream (We tried the frozen Strawberry Compote – yum!)

-Smoothies

-Mylk (purposefully misspelled).

-Soup

-Bites

-Latte’s

And that was just what was in my box!

Everything is always plant-based, gluten-free and dairy-free to fit with any dietary preferences you have!

So, as you can see, Daily Harvest offers a plethora of different items (over 90 options!) – more than they could ever show and/or describe in a 30 or 60 second television spot.

It was becoming clear why I couldn’t tell exactly what types of foods Daily Harvest offered from their ads – simply because they offer so many!

In fact they have so many different options that I haven’t been able to try all the ones we received – yet – so I will just focus on those that I have tried for this review.

HARVEST BOWLS

Other than their amazing Strawberry + Rich, Rippled Berry Compote Scoops, which I tried immediately upon receiving my meal kit box, the first hot meal I tried was their Spinach + Shiitake Grits Harvest Bowl.

Here it is in my saute pan…

On each item package, there are clear and very simple instructions for the best ways to prepare each meal contained within. Daily Harvest’s food can be prepared in the microwave for a quick meal on the go or simply heated up in a saute pan like I am doing above.

The Spinach + Shiitake Grits meal was delicious and as someone with a food blog that promotes nutritious, low carb recipes, this had to be one of Daily Harvest’s healthiest and lowest carb offerings (they are all pretty healthy)!

Healthy Meals On The Go

The next day my wife had to go into the office and she was in a hurry so she grabbed another of the Harvest Bowls Daily Harvest sent us to bring with her for a quick lunch – The Sweet Potato + Wild Rice Hash.

Around lunch time she texted me the following, and I quote: “The sweet potato/bean/rice bowl is amazing, btw…

That’s a pretty good endorsement if you ask me – and she made it in less than 5 minutes in her office microwave.

The other cool thing about their Harvest Bowls is that you can microwave and eat them right out of the 100% compostable containers they come packaged in!

So, to help categorize their offerings, the Harvest Bowls are the largest-size hot meals that Daily Harvest provides and, as such, I would put them in their Lunch/Dinner Category.

The Harvest Bowls did NOT LAST LONG in our household!

OAT BOWLS

The next Daily Harvest offering we tried was one of their their Oat Bowls

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Daily-Harvest-Oat-Bowl.jpg

Just add your preferred milk or other liquid. You can eat their Oat Bowls hot or cold. as overnight oats.

Think of these Oat Bowls as an Organic, healthy alternative to your classic Oat Meal. I am not a huge Oat Meal guy – especially in the hot summer months – but my wife, Jen, loves oatmeal at any time of the year.

She was the first one to try their Apple + Cinnamon Oat Bowl pictured above and said she really liked it!

She must have really enjoyed it because I didn’t have a chance to photograph the final product since it was gone before I knew it!

Daily Harvest’s Oat Bowls are great for a warm or cold Organic Oat Meal offering. I would put these in the Breakfast Category.

FLATBREAD

We received two types of flatbread in our assorted box…

I decided to try the Tomatillo + Pepper one first.

Again, don’t be too discouraged if you are not an ‘expert cook’ there are clear and VERY SIMPLE instruction right on each package.

If you can turn on an oven and open a package, you should be good to prepare any Daily Harvest offering quickly and easily.

The finished Flatbread is below (Note: I added the clementine slices for color)

The flatbread was delicious, but definitely one of their higher-calorie offerings. Nothing outrageous, and at 350 calories was pretty good for what is essentially a small thin-crust pizza.

The Flatbread I made above was more than enough for a full meal, but if sharing between 2 – 3 people maybe consider it as part of their Appetizer Category.

Again, you can enjoy Daily Harvest however you prefer, but as someone with an engineering background, I have an obsession with categorizing everything.

If these recommendations help you as you determine whether you would like to Try Daily Harvest or what specific offerings you want to use to build your Box, great.

SMOOTHIES

The first smoothie we tried was their Mango + Papaya, which they say tastes like a creamy mango sorbet.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Daily-Harvest-Smoothie-in-blender-with-bananas.jpg

We added the fresh banana and used our own Almond Milk – we haven’t ventured to try Daily Harvest’s MYLK yet (their plant-based milk).

Here is the finished (blended) smoothie – it was delicious!

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Daily-Harvest-Delicious-Smoothie.jpg

One of the nicest things about their smoothies are that even after they are left in the refrigerator, the ingredients did not separate and tasted just as good as when first out of the blender.

MYLK

Mylk is their trademarked frozen and plant-based milk used for making their smoothies or oat bowls. We haven’t tried it yet – but it certainly looks interesting!

Bites

Our box contained another unique item: Cacao Nib + Vanilla Bites. These were able to be enjoyed right out of the container WITHOUT waiting forever for them to thaw.

These were really good and surprisingly filling!

What We Haven’t Tried – Yet

We haven’t tried their Latte’s, Chia Bowls, or Soups yet so I cannot give an honest opinion of them in this review. But these are on the docket for the upcoming week!

How Much Does Daily Harvest Cost?

According to their website, Oat Bowls and Chia Bowls are $5.99, Soups, Smoothies and Bites are $7.99, Harvest Bowls, Flatbreads and Scoops (their plant-based ice-cream alternative), $8.99.

So, not incredibly expensive – especially when you consider that built into this price is the packaging, the delivery, the convenience…

How Does Daily Harvest Differ From Other Meal Kit Delivery Services

The variety of items that Daily Harvest provides certainly places them among the most diverse of the popular meal delivery services out there right now.

They offer unique items, such as Cacao Nib + Vanilla Bites – a unique pop-in-your-mouth treat that tastes really delicious right out of the freezer – somehow they engineered this item to not become rock solid frozen so that you can eat these right out of the freezer!

Greenlife – Cookware for the home chef

Their prices are comparable (maybe even a little less than some other meal delivery services when you consider the 95% organic ingredients Daily Harvest uses).

HITS

Their Harvest Bowls were a big hit with Jen and me. Healthy, nutritious and easy-to-prepare in the microwave or on the stove it is really convenient to have a healthy, substantial meal, that is ready in minutes.

The same can be said of their Oat Bowls – great, organic Oatmeal that is simple to make and very healthy.

Nothing Artificial – Daily Harvest uses all natural, and 95% organic ingredients. They also never use any preservatives, fillers or artificial anything. A Big PLUS!

All Daily Harvest Items Include Simple Cooking/Preparation Instructions right on each package so you can have a healthy meal in minutes. And you don’t have to be a professional chef to prepare them.

Convenience – Have I mentioned, convenience yet?

100% Compostable Bowls and majority Curbside Recyclable Packaging – a HUGE PLUS!!!

MISSES

Too many items – this could also be a HIT (depending on how you look at it). I am a narrow and deep focus type of person so I would have preferred if Daily Harvest just made their awesome Harvest and Oat Bowls – and more variety of these.

Or if they just did smoothies and offered fifty different types of healthy smoothies and became known for their insane smoothie offerings that would be alright with me.

Greenlife – Cookware for the home chef

Having somewhat of an introverted personality, the narrow and deep focus is just a personal preference of mine – in everything I do – and I understand not everybody is like this.

However, by offering so many diverse options, Daily Harvest makes it possible that everyone can customize their own meal delivery experience, which I am sure is part of their devious plan!

No Warning On Outside of Box About Not Touching the Dry Ice – Plenty of warnings inside the box, but when we received ours the contents had shifted and the warning was not immediately obvious.

CONCLUSION

Daily Harvest is one of the newer players – relatively – in the Meal Delivery Service industry. However with their diverse array of options and customizable experience you can construct your Meal Delivery Box with the food items you prefer most.

The ingredients they use are 95% organic and their Harvest Bowls and Strawberry + Rich, Rippled Berry Compote Scoops were my favorite items, although I did enjoy the flatbread quite a bit.

Jen absolutely loved the Sweet Potato + Wild Rice Hash Harvest Bowl and, of course, the Strawberry + Rich, Rippled Berry Compote Scoops .

And if you’ve made it this far…here is that delicious, rock-solid frozen Strawberry Scoops keep talking about all throughout this review article.
